S&S E Shorty Carb

Postby Evo » Thu Jul 29, 2010 2:29 pm

"Bev" was popping back throught the carb and would drag at times before picking up again. Pulled carb and manifold off, found a split in the rear gasket. Replaced and refitted carb, checked jets, cleaned and replaced. Checked plugs, cleaned and replaced. Took fuel mixture and idle back to stock, double checked. Now when she is kicked, sometimes get a good bite and then she dies. Spent about 3/4 of an hour kicking her but couldn't get her to fire. Good spark and fuel line is good. :dunno: Any ideas? Angry? Pills?

check mixture screw is right, check that you have cvonnected to enrichener when you put filter housing back on. unleaded fuel fucks spark plugs ,have found cleaning plugs doesnt work too often,if plugs are or have been fouled ,throw em over your shoulder and buy newies.

Thanks Larry and Angry. I have been told by a couple of blokes that it is a shovel and to expect it on a regular basis. Will throw a new set of plugs into her and see how she goes. Might swap it out to a CV as they work well on a shovel apparently

I have run both an E Series and later a CV (when the E series rattled to bits) on my 1200 shovel. The CV is a good reliable, servicable carb - maybe not quite as responsive as the S&S but that probably isn't a big priority on a rigid anyway . . .

check wot ignition you are running, some electronic ignitions are not too good for kickstart, good quality ones will have a switch to change over to kick or electric. S and S carbs work ok on shovels,cv works well too.i would be rechecking timing etc. try kiccking it through a few times with fuel on and ignition off ,then 2 pumps on throttle, fuel off, ignition on and kick hard. kickstarting shovels can be an art, each one has its own idiosynchrosies, each one requires a different technique, may take a while but you should work out which one works. good luck, your gonna get plenty of exercise.

Thanks Angry, appreciate the offer. She was firing up before we replaced the manifold gaskets but considering we played with the fuel mix etc prior to that, guess we have to go back to the start. She is running points so no prob with the ignition. When I get a chance, will start from scratch. You're right about the kick technique, just haven't worked out what she likes yet. I know swearing, abusing and the odd dry retching fit don't work but IT WILL GET SORTED. Guess she is just showing me her personality. Makes it easy if anyone wants to borrow her, if you can kick her, you can ride her. :clint:
